Microsoft left for the end of its conference the information regarding Xbox Project Scarlett, its new generation console that will appear towards the end of 2020. Although we have not seen the machine yet, we have important documentation to begin to understand what they are. the main intentions of the Xbox brand for the coming years: retrocompatibility, immediacy of game, power, streaming …
We review the main keys that must be taken into account, also making a brief review of what proposes its great rival: Sony and its PlayStation 5.
The brand Xbox has a very strong support for the backward compatibility in their consoles. That concern is manifested in Xbox Project Scarlett with the promise that it will be “the most compatible console they have ever had.” Specifically, Phil Spencer talked about Scarlett going to be retrocompatible with Xbox One and previous generations, and not only in terms of video games, but also accessories. This brings together four generations of content and confirms that we will have games available from the first Xbox, including those we had purchased on Xbox Live. By the way, Scarlett will have support for physical video games.
Sony already announced a few months ago with the features of PlayStation 5 that this new generation was going to turn on the opportunity to make the load times disappear. Microsoft confirms this in E3, noting the importance of SSD hard drives in the next-gen equation. They were a Virtual RAM, with a performance, as they claim, “40 times higher than that of the current generation of consoles.”
Microsoft has a close collaboration with AMD, which translates into the incorporation of the AMD Ryzen Zen 2 (CPU) and Navi Radeon RDNA (GPU) chips, the latter with Ray Tracing technology. What does this mean? According to Phil Spencer, it will reach 120 frames per second, with a variable refresh rate that will result in an “ultra-reduced” ” latency and a resolution of up to 8K. In addition, it will be four times more powerful than Xbox One X and will have GDDR6 memory.
Microsoft has extensive experience in the online industry, and Xbox Project Scarlett has already confirmed that they will be involved in the same responsible team of Xbox Live. One of the great objectives is that, but the console itself becomes a server for you to continue playing where you want: computers, phones, tablets … This will launch Xbox One with the technology Console Streaming (that they have defined as ” your personal and free xCloud server “). We will know more details in the future. The service will be available this October.
Along with the new information provided on Xbox Project Scarlett, Microsoft officials also spoke about Halo Infinite as a launch videogame for the machine, a great bet to demonstrate its power, but also the lower latency and improved control fluency . In this sense, it will be a good test to see things like the use of ray tracing technology, which promises to become one of the keys of next-gen video games. Of course, it will be interesting to see how the new hardware can make the original Xbox One games shine even more thanks to the backward compatibility. A lot remains to be seen!
Sony confirmed very similar features to those of the Xbox Project Scarlett: AMD Ryzen third-generation CPU, Radeon Navi GPU with Ray Tracing support, 8K graphics, SSD drive to make it disappear load times, hardware, backward PS4 … although some insiders said that Scarlett will be more advanced, it seems that if we have to look for differences, we will have more in the exclusive, quality of subscription services and price (which will be a decisive factor ). The attention to the user will take precedence over any hardware feature, because both are very similar in that aspect.
