War Thunder does not stop growing in content and modes thanks to its updates, and today it is the turn of the World War mode that starts its Open Beta. What can you expect in this new way? Well, the opportunity to recreate famous battles of the Second World War, to follow the steps of history or completely change its course. The World War mode is a season-based event, with the first one in effect until June 10.
In the game, these battles are organized in “Operations”, which are based on events of the real world and combat campaigns, such as the Battle of El Alamein or the Battle of Vitebsk. Commanders on both sides can move air and ground armies on a strategic map, and when those armies meet, their confrontation is resolved by a battle session between players. The results can have significant effects on the outcome of the Operation, since the defeated side withdraws and the vehicles or even complete regiments.
The list of available vehicles in each Operation is limited by historical context, which means that it is not possible to fly a jet fighter over the skies of the Alamein or ride in a Japanese tank to fight in Vitebsk. Anyway, if a player does not have any of the required vehicles, we can still participate by receiving a vehicle in his basic modification.
The modes of each operation include assault, defense, convoy attacks, missions of coverage and direct confrontations with ground and air forces. The vital link between the battles is the strategic map.
War Thunder can be downloaded for free and played on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
