Do video games help us be more creative? A recent study from the Iowa State University shows that those who play Minecraft can become more creative than people who enjoy other titles or are alien to the world of video games. However, the most curious thing is that the result also depends on the way we enjoy the successful title of Mojang.
Psychology professor Douglas Gentile opted to divide the study participants into three groups. One of these focused his attention on playing the popular Minecraft without any instruction; while the others played to NASCAR title or just watched television. After 40 minutes of the session, the research team asked them to draw an extraterrestrial. The result? Those who had played Minecraft proved to be much more creative.
The most interesting thing is that a second group of fans who played Minecraft with the instruction to “be as creative as possible” ” They did not manage to stand out from the rest of the groups. What is this about? The result is not entirely clear. ” Creativity may be like a muscle, and they will try so hard during the game that they will be exhausted to the test of drawing the extraterrestrial, ” they explain from the university. “Or maybe they would not like us to tell them how to play, and that’s why they subtly rejected our instructions.”
From the university they point out that the results are similar to those seen with other video games, which help improve creativity, but it matters a lot how you enjoy these titles.
