There is a new danger in Fallout 76 that can turn the game into a nightmare: an organized group of fans dedicated to chasing and eating other players. Although cannibalism is not something new within the games of the saga, it could be the first time in which a culture is generated within the game that revolves around this practice, in an almost ritual way.
In a recent interview, some players confess how they managed to overcome their moral barriers in a practice that begins to fulfill a function that is no longer mere survival. What at first might be a simple matter of eating to survive has ended up being a game mechanic for a specific group of fans. EATT (Appalachian tasting organization) is an association of players that have normalized eating other playmates whenever they see fit.
EATT, inspired by the White Glove Society family of Fallout: New Vegas, has been growing around the idea that consuming human flesh is a ritual of elevation, since it involves consuming the meat of that species supposedly at the top of the food chain. For a year this group has been adding members who can not practice a cannibalism in a ritual way, but organize fights to the death, hunts of humans and even sessions of humorous monologues about cannibalism. Although it is not essential to practice cannibalism to be part of this group, it is striking to see how these players are integrated into EATT, and to what extent they trust the behavior of their comrades, who can they eat their character with the simple touch of a button.
It is also curious how the members of EATT have taken a taboo practically reserved for non-player characters and villains of the games, and have made it their own role, spontaneously creating a whole social nucleus within the title of Bethesda. Although its digital cannibalism is still part of the fictional role that all players assume in this role-playing game, there are many fans who see in EATT a toxic element to the ecosystem of the game, and who do not hesitate to attack their members.
Since the launch of this game we have seen some players offer the Fallout 76 community different challenges, or simple fun as a disk for mutant cows, but EATT seems to move to another level, being one of the best organized groups of the community and offering an authentic experience limit for the lovers of the role. And it does so by following the post-apocalyptic approach of the game, becoming one of the most faithful to the original idea of Bethesda to take humanity to the limit.
