The USB Promoter Group has prepared a new standard for USB: USB4. Yes, it does not have space or points, and maybe this defines in part the essence of what you want to bring to the market. Soon they should have their specifications ready, but what is still unknown is the first compatible products. However, the people of Anandtech also had that doubt and took advantage of the past Computex to ask the question. The heads of the USB-IF responded that the validation process of the specifications goes fast, and that the first USB4 products should arrive by the end of next year.
Currently the USB standard is a mess, among the several generations that exist and the extended versions of the current specifications, such as USB 3.2 Gen 1, Gen 2, Gen 2×2 … We already mentioned it a few months ago before the arrival of USB 3.2. And that’s not counting the different types of connectors: Type A, Type C … However, this new USB4 will only use the type C connector and will integrate the Thunderbolt 3 standard. With regard to speeds, it will arrive with between 20 and 40 Gbps. Of course, although USB-IF plans to finish the specification for the summer and release the first devices next year, the current implementation will take years to arrive.
